Achieve Your Business Dreams in 2013
3 Comments

What’s your ultimate dream for your business? Are you living it—or are you not quite there yet? One reason many small business owners fall short of their big goals is the same reason we’re compelled to reach for them: We’re stubbornly independent. That independence is a great quality when it spurs us to strike out on our own, to do the thing our boss said couldn’t be done, to create something out of nothing. But when independence keeps us from asking for help when we need it…well, that’s not so great.

Are you relying solely on yourself to make your business dreams come true? Here are some ways to break that habit in 2013.

Delegate. Even those of us with employees too often try to do everything ourselves. “I can do it better,” we say, or “It takes too long to show someone else.” Yes, it may take a bit longer to train someone on a task than it would to do it yourself—but multiply the time by how often you do that task, and you’ll see the ultimate savings. Plus, surrounding yourself with people who are strong where you’re weak—then delegating to them—will make your business stronger, too.

Share. When you’re feeling stressed out, overwhelmed or unsure of what to do, open up to somebody. It can be your best friend, your spouse or a colleague with whom you can be open and honest. Keeping your problems inside doesn’t help anyone, but letting them out can be cathartic (and often shows you the solution to your problem).

Learn. Business is changing so fast today that no one can keep up without a few lessons now and then. Whether you take a night class to earn your MBA, do an online course to become proficient in using Excel or attend a community college class on marketing your business, there are as many ways to learn as there are things to know.

Get help. Of course, the mentors at SCORE can help you learn, listen to your issues and suggest solutions. If you don’t have a mentor, what are you waiting for? Check out the SCORE website to get matched with one pronto and get help 24/7.

By expanding the circle of people you rely on, you’ll ease the burden on yourself and make your business more successful to boot. Why not make 2013 the year you really achieve your dreams?

These are so important, especially to remind ourselves as we head into a new year. They can be applied really well to trade show planning as well! “Get help” is especially relevant :)
