In one of my earlier blogs, I wrote about how setting up an online retail store is easier than you think. In fact, if you choose to utilize an existing ecommerce platform such as eBay, Amazon or etsy.com for your storefront, it could take under an hour to set up. However, when you’re using someone else’s platform to put your storefront on you should have your own online identity, or domain name, just as Yadana Beads has done. If you go to YadanaBeads.com, you’ll see their Web address “points” to their etsy storefront at etsy.com/shop/yadanabeads. By registering their own domain name, Yadana Beads has a branded Web address they can market to their customers with, a consistent address on the Web in case they want to move their storefront from etsy one day, and the ability for a company-branded email to help them look more credible through the domain name.

Some of the business owners I’ve heard from are excited by these ideas but are wondering, how exactly do I point a domain name to a specific page or website?
Here’s an easy step-by-step process to point, or redirect, your domain name (all registrars are a little different, but should be fairly similar). The idea of Web forwarding is similar to forwarding an email. What you are basically doing is creating a rule that says all visitors to your domain should be directed to a Web location of your choice. You can change it at any time. If you want specific instructions for your registrar (the company you purchased your domain name through), you can search their website with the terms ‘web forwarding’ or ‘redirect domain name.’
