My All-Time Favorite & Indispensible SEO Guides

So by now, I’ll assume that you’re an aspiring, go-get-’em type of entrepreneur willing to put in the work and energy into improving your SEO. I find that in the world of Search Engine Optimization, knowledge is power;  SEO is a confusing and complex process in which there are a myriad of different approaches you can take. So if you’re aiming for success, you’ll need to do your research and and educate yourself. Even if you’re planning on hiring an outside SEO firm to handle your needs, I strongly suggest that you acquaint yourself with the foundations of SEO (and also check up on staples like Google Analytics, Google Adwords, Facebook ads etc.).  That way you’ll be able to communicate what your needs are once it comes time to meeting with a specialist. Not sure where to begin? Below are three of my favorite SEO guides that are essential to anyone’s Search Engine Optimization ‘education’:

1. Quora Forum: Search Engine Optimization
Quora is my go-to place for expert information and I mean expert. It’s also my favorite free, online forum for entrepreneur related topics. Ask a properly-directed question and you can get consultants from top internet marketing and SEO agencies to respond to you with insightful commentary and advice. Don’t worry about asking anything too basic, there are questions on Quora as simple as “How can SEO improve your business?” to more high-level questions like “How do I recover my site from Google Penguin?” Whatever the question, my experience on Quora has revealed that experts are more than happy to share their knowledge.

2. Smashing Magazine’s “A Guide to Google Analytics and Useful Tools
Using Google Analytics is crucial to measuring visitor traffic to your site and SEO analytics. It’s also free which makes it an indispensable staple in your arsenal of online marketing tools. Yet Google Analytics is not wholly easy to master – play around with it first and when you’re ready to get serious, read Smashing Magazine’s comprehensive guide (complete with videos and helpful links) to learn how to set up goals, create reports, track site content, manage AdSense and Adwords activity and much more. This guide is the most helpful and informative source I’ve found in teaching the basics of Google Analytics.

3. Portent’s Blog
Touted as one of the leading internet marketing firms, Portent provides a worthwhile, information packed blog that lives up to the agency’s reputation. Their blog features insight into all aspects of online marketing strategies, not just SEO. Many blog posts read as straightforward “how-to” guides that even the least marketing-savvy layman can understand which makes for great reading if you’re just beginning to grasp the basics of search engine optimization.
