Energy flows where attention goes so negative thinking will take you down and keep you down. We can’t control everything that happens in our businesses or our lives. Often times we allow our negative thinking to make matters worse. We’ve all been there. For example, with my previous business NuKitchen, I wasn’t able to secure a final round of funding at the start of the last recession. It was rough and I seriously thought the business was going to close down and I allowed my negativity to eat away at me. So much that I seriously thought about leaving everything and catching the next Greyhound bus back to my hometown in Wisconsin.
My negativity continued to spiral downward over those following days and weeks- and went far beyond just being irritable and wallowing in self-pity. I was disengaging from the business and all my employees, who had been doing their jobs and working hard to create a great business, before, during, and after that ‘crisis’. I was short-tempered, confrontational, ignoring pressing current business decisions, arguing senselessly with my cofounder, and so on. It got to the point where the business was going to have to shut down, unnecessarily simply because I was in such a negative space. I took some time off to really think about my next steps and was able to regain my sense of purpose. I had a choice- I could continue down a negative path to nowhere or I can take a positive attitude and move forward. I chose the latter, shifting my attitude back to my normally positive self.
I read this quote from Scott Blum, DailyOm founder, “Choosing a more positive outlook allows us to focus on the positive aspects of our lives, and this can help us cope better with more difficult situations. Making a conscious effort to feed our minds positive thoughts will minimize and eventually eliminate feelings of frustration, and we benefit by feeling happier and more in control of our lives.”
I couldn’t agree more with his quote. Stop whining and don’t dwell in negativity- for too long. It’s an unhealthy place to be.
